Lesson
Search-aware vs offline AI
Some AI assistants can search the web and cite links. Others answer only from the text they were trained on. Search-aware tools like Google Gemini often work well when you need fresher information or when you want links you can click and verify.
Ask for sources, not just answers
When you want facts, ask explicitly: 'Answer briefly and include the sources you used, as clickable links.' If the AI answers without links, ask again: 'Please provide the URLs you used.' No links means no easy verification — treat the claim as unverified.
Cross-check the top claims
Open the top one or two sources yourself. If the AI says '78% of small businesses do X', find that statistic in the source. If it is not there, remove that claim from your notes. This is a 60-second habit that catches most made-up facts.
Everyday research uses
Comparing options, checking business hours, looking up general definitions, reading a summary before you dive into the full document. Do not use general AI answers as legal, medical, financial, or safety advice.
Example — France small shop research
A small-shop owner asks Gemini: 'What is the current standard VAT rate for goods in France? Reply briefly and include one official source link.' They open the link, confirm the number, and paste it into their pricing notes.
Prompt template
Sourced quick-research prompt
Please answer the question below in fewer than 120 words.
Include 1–3 source links you actually used.
If you are not sure, say 'I am not sure' instead of guessing.
Avoid legal, medical, or financial advice — point me to an expert or official source instead.
Question: [your question]
Practice task
Pick a real, non-personal question you had this week. Ask a search-aware AI for a sourced answer. Click the first source and check that the AI's main claim is actually in it. Save your notes and one link.
Success checklist
You asked for links in the prompt.
You clicked at least one link and read the relevant part.
You removed any claim you could not verify.
Your question was not about a specific real person's private data.
Knowledge check
Self-check only. Nothing here is scored. Tap a question to reveal the answer.
Reflection
What is one recurring question you spend time googling that a sourced AI answer could shorten?
Safety note
Do not use AI to research an individual private person. Search-aware AI can surface personal information that should not be aggregated without consent.
